The Athlete’s Advantage: Healthy Habits Start Before the Next Level
There is a lot that goes into being a young athlete, and chiropractic care for young athletes can be one part of supporting their health through all of it.
The practices, early mornings, time in the weight room, games, meets, schoolwork, jobs, friendships, and everything else happening outside of sports can make for a full schedule. And through it all, young athletes are not only becoming stronger competitors—they are growing into the people they are going to become.
At ChiroWay, that is something we love getting to see firsthand.
For the past 10 months, Anthony M., a senior and multi-sport athlete at Woodbury High School, has made regular chiropractic care at ChiroWay of Woodbury part of his routine.
Anthony competes in football and boys swim and dive, plays Ultimate Frisbee, works as a lifeguard during the summer, and still finds time for fishing, hunting, being outdoors, and spending time at the cabin.
And as he heads into his senior year, he already has plenty to be proud of.
Working Toward Something Bigger
For Anthony, being an athlete is about more than individual performance.
As an offensive guard and defensive tackle for Woodbury High School football, he knows what it means to work hard at his own position while still showing up for the team around him. And when he talks about what he values most about sports, that sense of connection stands out.
“The thing I like most about playing team sports especially football is the team spirit and the feeling of brotherhood. I am most proud of my weight lifting accomplishments of benching 275 lbs and dead lifting 500 lbs.”
There is a lot to be proud of in that answer. Anthony has set meaningful goals for himself and put in the work to reach them, while still recognizing that some of the best parts of athletics are the teammates, relationships, and shared experiences that come with competing together.
That commitment carries into the rest of his life, too. Like many high school athletes, Anthony is balancing practices and competition with school, work, friendships, and everything else that comes with being a senior.
“I prioritize school and sports. Whatever time I have left I spend with friends and work.”
Learning how to manage all of those responsibilities is part of growing as an athlete and as a person. The more young athletes begin taking ownership of their goals, their schedules, and their preparation, the more they can also begin taking ownership of the habits that support their health.
Because putting in the work is important, but learning how to take care of yourself through all of it matters, too.
Building Healthy Habits While You’re Young
Young athletes are constantly developing.
They are getting stronger, refining skills, adapting to new coaches and teammates, taking on more demanding schedules, and learning what their bodies need as training becomes more serious.
That makes the high school years an important time to begin establishing healthy habits.
Sleep. Nutrition. Movement. Recovery. Training. Time away from competition. And for some athletes and families, chiropractic care for young athletes can become another piece of that foundation.
The value of starting those habits young goes beyond a single season.
It gives athletes an opportunity to become more aware of their health while they are still developing, to recognize that taking care of themselves deserves the same consistency they give to practice, training, and preparation.
For Anthony, that introduction started at home.
His mom was already receiving care at ChiroWay of Woodbury, and her experience encouraged him to try chiropractic care for himself.
“I started going to Chiroway because my mom went there and felt better. I feel the benefits after each visit on my body.”
There is something meaningful in that.
Parents spend years introducing their kids to habits, opportunities, and experiences they hope will serve them well. Eventually, their kids decide which of those things they want to make their own.
For Anthony, chiropractic has become one of those routines.
Making Chiropractic Part of His Routine
Anthony has now been receiving care at ChiroWay of Woodbury for 10 months.
Football, swimming, strength training, school, work, and everyday life each place different demands on him. His chiropractic visits are one of the ways he has chosen to consistently take care of himself throughout all of it.
And Anthony can speak for himself about what he notices:
“The weekly sessions make my body feel looser and makes me more efficient in my everyday routines”
That matters to us.
At ChiroWay of Woodbury, our clients are never simply appointments on a schedule. We get to know the people who walk through our doors, what matters to them, what they are working toward, and what they want to be able to continue doing.
For Anthony, that happens to include Friday nights on the football field, time in the pool, big goals in the weight room, and everything else that comes with being an active high school senior.
Our role is not to define those goals for him. It is to care for Anthony while he pursues them.
Taking Care of the Athlete Behind the Performance
Athletes are naturally focused on performance.
Get stronger. Improve your technique. Learn the playbook. Drop your time. Earn your position. Help your team win.
There is always something to work toward.
But behind every lift, practice, game, and personal best is the athlete asking their body to respond.
Anthony has already begun connecting those two things.
“Taking care of your health makes you perform better on the field and makes me able to do my job.”
Taking care of yourself as an athlete does not come down to one thing.
It can mean training appropriately, eating well, prioritizing sleep, making time for recovery, staying active, listening to your coaches, and paying attention to what your body is telling you.
Chiropractic care can be one part of that broader approach.
At ChiroWay, our focus is on neurological function and adaptability through consistent chiropractic adjustments. For young athletes who are continually responding to training, competition, school, growth, and everyday life, caring for their health proactively can help reinforce an important mindset:
Your health deserves attention before something forces you to pay attention to it.
Becoming Coachable, Adaptable, and Confident
The strongest athletes are not simply the ones who can lift the most weight or make the biggest play.
They are often the ones willing to learn.
Anthony’s advice to athletes coming behind him says a lot about the kind of teammate and competitor he is becoming:
“Be coachable and take the advice you receive and put it towards your position.”
Being coachable requires humility and confidence at the same time.
You have to believe in what you are capable of while still being willing to listen, adjust, and improve.
Those lessons extend beyond sports.
As young people grow, they begin taking greater ownership of their schedules, choices, goals, and eventually their health. The habits introduced to them along the way can give them a stronger foundation for that independence.
And when Anthony was asked how he stays adaptable through the wins, losses, growth, setbacks, and challenges that come with athletics, his answer brought everything back to something simple:
“Taking care of my body so I can perform at my best”
That is a mindset worth developing at any age.
A Senior Season Worth Being Excited About
Now Anthony gets to head into his senior year.
There are more practices ahead. More opportunities to get stronger. More time with teammates. More Friday nights. More memories still waiting to be made.
And Anthony has a clear goal for what he hopes his team can accomplish:
“My goal is for our team to be conference champions and to have a great season.”
We love seeing our clients set goals like that. Part of caring for people is getting excited about what they are excited about.
It means celebrating the personal bests. Asking how the game went. Hearing about the next goal. Watching someone grow over months and years and knowing that, in some small way, you have been able to be part of their journey.
Anthony has already accomplished a lot, and there is plenty still ahead of him.
The Athlete’s Advantage Goes Beyond One Season
Sports give young people opportunities to discover what they are capable of.
They teach discipline, teamwork, responsibility, resilience, confidence, and the value of putting consistent effort toward something that matters. Healthy habits can become part of that development, too.
The earlier young athletes begin learning that taking care of themselves matters, the more opportunity they have to carry that mindset forward, whether their next chapter includes collegiate athletics, recreational sports, a career, a family, or something they have not imagined yet.
Parents can help introduce those habits. Coaches can reinforce them. But eventually, young athletes begin taking ownership of them for themselves.
Anthony’s story is a great example of that.
His mom introduced him to ChiroWay. Anthony chose to make care part of his own routine. And as he continues getting stronger, competing, working toward team goals, and preparing for whatever comes next, he is also learning the value of taking care of himself along the way.
That is an advantage worth carrying far beyond high school athletics.
At ChiroWay, we are grateful to be part of Anthony’s journey and proud to care for athletes and families throughout our community.
We’ll be cheering you on through every season life brings.
