Behind the Badge: How Recovery Supports Performance, Resilience, and Service
When people need help, protectors respond. But with every demand comes a need to recover.
Police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and other first responders step into stressful situations, uncertain moments, and sometimes unimaginable circumstances as part of their commitment to the communities they serve.
Yet behind every uniform is a person navigating life’s demands, too. For those who spend so much of their lives showing up for others, making space to recover and take care of themselves matters.
For Ryan S., a police officer and client at ChiroWay of Woodbury, that lesson has become deeply personal.
A Calling That Started Early
Ryan S. has spent the last 10 years in law enforcement, but his desire to become a police officer started long before he ever put on a uniform.
“I always knew that I wanted to be a police officer since I was a little kid,” Ryan S. shared. “As a kid, I used to jump on my bike and try to chase down sirens and see what it was that they were responding to.”
Before entering law enforcement, Ryan S. spent 12 years in corporate America. But the desire to serve his community never went away.
Today, the part of the job that means the most to him is the opportunity to be there for people when they need someone most.
“The greatest reward to being a police officer is to help people in their time of need and hopefully bring them some peace and calmness in the midst of chaos.”
For Ryan S., responding is more than part of his job. It is something he has felt called to do for most of his life.
The Person Behind the Uniform
It can be easy to see the uniform before the person wearing it.
Ryan S. hopes people remember that police departments are filled with people who go home to families, responsibilities, and lives outside of their work.
“The police force is comprised of men and women who are simply husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters who just want to help people.”
Like anyone else, protectors experience the everyday demands of life. The difference is that they may head into a shift knowing they will also be asked to respond to situations most people will never encounter.
Those experiences do not always disappear when the uniform comes off.
For Ryan S., taking care of himself means recognizing that recovery needs to happen in more than one way.
Making Space to Recover
“Physical, mental, and spiritual health is essential to a healthy police officer,” Ryan S. shared. “Every shift we see things and go through situations that normal people don’t experience, and it’s important to be able to have outlets to manage the stressors accordingly.”
Recovery looks different for everyone.
It may mean making time for family, finding an outlet for the stress of a difficult shift, prioritizing physical health, or building routines that help you continue navigating everything life asks of you.
For Ryan S., chiropractic care has become one part of that routine.
Regular chiropractic care gives him a consistent opportunity to support his adaptability and recovery as he balances the demands of law enforcement with the demands of everyday life.
Sometimes, taking care of others starts with recognizing the importance of taking care of yourself, too.
When Recovery Became Crucial
In 2023, recovery took on an entirely new meaning for Ryan S. when he was shot.
In a moment, the importance of taking care of himself physically, mentally, and spiritually became more real than ever.
Recovery was not about one single routine or one part of his health. It meant finding ways to support himself as he worked toward returning to his family, his life, and the career he had wanted since he was a child.
Chiropractic care became one part of that process.
“Since I was shot in 2023, ChiroWay has played a large part in my recovery and allowing me to stay on the street and in my uniform.”
Ryan S.’s connection to ChiroWay actually began through his wife, who had already been receiving chiropractic care for two years before he started. Over time, and especially throughout his own recovery, care became part of the routine he continued to prioritize for himself.
Today, Ryan S. is still doing the work he loves. He is still responding. Still serving. Still wearing the uniform.
And when it comes to what he would tell someone about chiropractic care, his answer is simple:
“Trust the process!”
For Those Who Spend Their Lives Showing Up For Others
Ryan S.’s story is his own, but the need to recover from life’s demands is something we all share.
For protectors, those demands can be especially unique. Their work asks them to step forward when others need help, remain ready for the unexpected, and carry experiences that most people may never fully understand.
Recovery does not have to wait until life forces you to slow down.
At ChiroWay, we believe regular chiropractic care can be part of a routine that supports neurological adaptability and helps individuals navigate the demands placed upon them. For Ryan S., it has become one part of how he continues to take care of himself while doing the work he has felt called to do for most of his life.
To Ryan S. and the protectors throughout our communities: thank you for continuing to show up for others.
We hope you remember to make space to recover, too.
